Review Of The Cup Winners Cup & Shields Up Cup – 7th November 2004).

The Winter League season begins with stories of debate and comebacks.  In the Shields Up Cup, which was for players who had not qualified for the Cup Winners Cup, Robert Jones eased comfortably into the Final with wins against Jordan Corns & Joe Harper, however the match between Jordan & Joe caused some debate when Jordan thought he had scored as a result of a free-kick, however the referee ruled that the ball had not crossed the line when the half time whistle had sounded, thus unlucky the game ended in a draw and Jordan was out of the cup.  In the Shields Up Cup Final, Robert again beat Joe 3-0 to win his elusive first trophy.

The Cup Winners Cup seemed to go smoothly with both Nigel Harris & Danny Lymer-Jones beating Mike Rowan 3-0 in both games to set up the decider for the Cup Winners Cup Final match.  Again amazing scenes when Danny had taken a 2-0 lead against Nigel, when with just under three minutes to go, Nigel grabbed what he thought might be a consolation goal.  This may have caused a lapse in concentration as with just over one and a half minutes to go, Nigel grabbed the elusive equaliser and the match went to shots.  After five shots each, the score was 1-1 when Nigel won the sudden death 2-1.  Meanwhile the League Cup campaign got underway with defending champion Nigel in Group A beating Jordan, whilst yet again Nigel had to come from behind against Joe after Joe was 2-0 up at half time.  Luckily enough Nigel ended the game winning 4-2 and has booked his place in the semi-final.  Robert has also booked his place in the semi-final with comfortable wins against Jordan & Joe and so the final game in the group is to decide the place for the semi finals!!  In the League Cup Group B, the one match played between Danny & last year’s League Cup Runner Up Mike ended with Danny winning 2-0 and needing only a point to secure his league cup semi-final place.
